1. Key tourism destinations drive Europe’s GOPPAR
Key tourism destinations, including Dublin and Barcelona, helped hotels in Europe record a 7.1% year-on-year increase in GOPPAR for August 2017, achieving €62.26, according to the latest data from HotStats.
Room occupancies for the month averaged at 78.7% while average room rate jumped 4.8% to €149.95. As a result, hotels in Europe saw RevPAR increase 5.7% to €117.55.
The leisure segment fuelled most of this growth, accounting for 38.9% of the market mix, up from 30.3% in the 12 months to August 2017. For the leisure market, RevPAR rose 6.7% to €109.68.

2. London and Paris most popular cities in Europe
MasterCard’s 2017 Global Destination Cities Index has highlighted the most popular cities in the world for international visitors. Measuring visitor volume and spending for 132 destination cities, this year’s Index has placed London second, with projected arrivals of 20 million in 2017, just behind first place Bangkok with 20.2 million international overnight visitors. Paris came third with a forecast of 16.1 million visitors.
Asian and Middle East destinations featured heavily in the top 10, while Europe’s Istanbul in Turkey came in 10th with a projected 9.24 million arrivals for 2017.

3. UK tourism aims to boost economy by billions
The UK’s tourism industry is hoping to more than double its economic contributions as it moves forward with a potential sector deal under the UK Government’s Industrial Strategy, following agreement from the Tourism Industry Council on the same.
Currently, tourism generates £127 billion each year for the UK economy, but the aim is to double this to more than £268 billion within a decade through the sector deal, which aims to align the industry on four priorities:
- A 10-year tourism and hospitality skills campaign to boost recruitment
- Boosting productivity by extending the tourism season year round
- Improve connections to increase inbound visits from more markets by 2030
- Creating ‘tourism zones’ to build quality tourism products that meet visitors needs and expectations.

4. GOPPAR up for hotels in the Middle East & Africa
Hotels in the Middle East & Africa are heaving a sigh of relief after recording a 6.6% year-on-year increase in GOPPAR for August – only the third month this year that profit has increased, according to the latest report from HotStats.
While hotels in the region saw occupancy drop 1%, this was offset by a 5.8% increase in average room rate, at $152.85, leading to a 4.2% year-on-year increase in RevPAR, to $98.72.

5. UK hotel sector to feel impact of slowing economy
An increase in inventory, a slowdown in the economy and the wearing off of the weak pound effect on inbound tourism are all likely to check the UK’s hotel sector in 2018, according to a report by PwC.
However, the forecasted impact on London’s hotels appears to be minimal, with PwC predicting a 2.3% increase in year-on-year occupancy growth, and a 3.6% increase in average daily rate to £148.

6. UAE predicts tourism spending to reach $56 billion by 2022
The UAE’s travel and tourism sector is set to see a steady increase in revenue, with spending set to hit $56 billion by 2022, according to analysis conducted by the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and data from Business Monitor International and the World Travel and Tourism Council.
Total spending in the UAE tourism sector is forecast to grow 4.5% year on year in 2017 to reach $42 billion. As Dubai prepares to host Expo 2020, tourism spend and demand are set to increase rapidly, with the emirate expected to welcome more than 20 million visitors by 2020.

7. World Travel Awards European winners announced
Portugal stole the show at the World Travel Awards’ Europe Gala Ceremony 2017, held at the end of September, with the country voted Europe’s Leading Destination and Turismo de Portugal awarded the prize for Europe’s Leading Tourist Board.
Hotel groups and individual properties awarded for excellence included Melia Hotels International and Pestana Porto Santo Beach & Spa Resort. The Awards Grand Final takes place in Vietnam on 10 December, 2017.
